India 2010-11 cotton output unlikely to miss estimate

Mumbai - India's cotton output in the crop year that started Oct. 1 is unlikely to fall short of an earlier estimate of 32.5 million bales despite some crop damages due to rains, a senior government official said Tuesday.

Rains caused some damages in Andhra Pradesh state, a major cotton producer, last month, but production in Maharashtra state is expected to be higher, Textile Commissioner A.B. Joshi told reporters on the sidelines of an industry conference.

India's cotton output in 2009-10 was estimated at 29.5 million bales. Each bale weighs 170 kilograms.
